The Chancellor and Chairman of the Board of Regents of Covenant University, Dr. David Oyedepo, recently revealed that he studied nine prestigious foreign universities before founding the institution. This announcement was made during the university’s convocation and conferment of degrees held in Ota, Ogun State.
Covenant University has earned a commendable ranking as the top university in Nigeria and the sixth in West Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, according to the Times Higher Education World Universities Ranking 2025. The institution is the only Nigerian university featured among the top 1,000 universities globally.
During his speech on ‘What Makes Covenant University Unique,’ Oyedepo shared how the insights gained from esteemed universities such as Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, Caltech, MIT, Stanford, Duke, and Dartmouth played a pivotal role in shaping the university’s core values. He emphasized, “While nothing was copied, a lot of inspiration was drawn from those studies, which eventually led to the crafting of our core values, making our products very unique.”
Dr. Oyedepo, who is also the founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, mentioned that the university’s inception was divinely inspired, the education strategy is deliberate, and the training programs are uniquely designed. He expressed his dedication to offering a high-quality educational alternative that aims to guide students away from lifelong struggles.
In a notable achievement, a total of 339 students graduated with First-Class degrees during the university’s 19th Convocation. Among the graduates, 339 earned first-class honors (23%), 762 received second-class upper honors (52.3%), and 330 achieved second-class lower grades (22.7%), with 25 obtaining third-class degrees (1.7%) and 151 completing postgraduate studies.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Abiodun Adebayo disclosed that the National Universities Commission has approved the launch of an Open Distance Learning Programme at the institution, starting with a B.Sc. in Computer Science. In his remarks titled “The Necessity of Patience,” the University’s Pro-Chancellor, Bishop David Abioye, encouraged the graduates to practice patience in their future endeavors.
