Gemini season is heating up with the launch of Google’s latest Pixel 9 smartphones, unveiled during the Made By Google event on August 13. This new line features cutting-edge enhancements powered by Google’s Gemini AI technology.
The Pixel 9 family comprises four models: the standard Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the innovative Pixel 9 Pro Fold. While the Pro Fold offers a unique foldable design, customers can choose between the standard Pixel 9 and the advanced Pro versions for a superior experience.
Starting with pricing, the Pixel 9 is available for $799, shipping on August 22. The Pixel 9 Pro, with a 6.3-inch display, begins at $999 and will ship on September 4, while the 6.8-inch Pixel 9 Pro XL is priced at $1,099 and ships on August 22. Both Pro editions offer storage options ranging from 128 GB to 1 TB, while the standard model offers 128 GB and 256 GB options.
Consumers can pre-order these devices now, with select retailers offering enticing gift card bonuses of $100 to $200 without requiring a trade-in. Additionally, major carriers are also facilitating preorders, albeit without the gift card incentives.
All Pixel 9 models are available in four distinct colors, with the exclusive Wintergreen and Barbie-esque Peony shades reserved for the standard Pixel 9. Notably, the pricing difference between the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL is solely attributed to the screen size, with Google ensuring that both sizes maintain identical technical specifications.
All Pixel 9 phones are powered by the state-of-the-art Tensor G4 chip, promising enhancements in internet browsing, app launching, and photo/video performance—reportedly up to 20% faster than their predecessor, the Pixel 8. Google claims these new devices are also twice as durable as previous models, although the sleek design suggests an emphasis on style over ruggedness.
The refreshed design also incorporates a new AI experience. Even users who don’t typically rely on AI will find value in features such as the Best Take function, which creates the ideal group photo, and the ability to retrieve details from calendar invitations effortlessly.
The camera and display improvements stand out as major advancements across all Pixel 9 models. The standard Pixel 9 boasts a display that is 35% brighter than its predecessor, enhancing visibility for its new 48 MP ultrawide lens. The Pro models offer even greater brightness, especially in sunlight, along with Google’s most sophisticated camera system yet, featuring a 42 MP front camera, Super Res Zoom for video, and enhanced Night Sight capabilities.
Those opting for the Pro models will also gain access to a complimentary one-year Google One AI Premium Plan, which includes 2TB of storage along with the most engaging Gemini features.
