SOUTHGATE, Mich. — An early-morning explosion devastated a home in Southgate, Michigan, leading to the tragic death of a woman who became trapped in the debris. A man was also severely injured, reportedly thrown into the front yard by the blast.
“Both victims sustained extensive burns and internal injuries,” stated a local police spokesperson. “The woman suffered significant leg injuries as well.”
The explosion was powerful enough to awaken residents before 6 a.m., sending a couch crashing into a window across the street and scattering debris across several blocks, with some fragments even caught in trees.
Local resident Arturo Ramirez initially mistook the blast for thunder, only to notice a crack forming on his ceiling moments later.
Emergency responders extracted a 38-year-old woman from the wreckage, but she succumbed to her injuries shortly thereafter, according to authorities.
Currently, the incident is being investigated as a possible gas-related explosion, although further inquiries are ongoing to determine the exact cause.
