New Year holiday traffic accidents across Thailand have resulted in a staggering 215 fatalities and left 1,354 injured from December 27 to 31.
According to official reports, a total of 1,398 traffic accidents were recorded during this period. The most significant loss of life occurred within Bangkok and Nonthaburi, each recording 10 deaths.
Ayuthaya witnessed the highest number of accidents with 44 incidents, while Phuket accounted for the largest number of injuries, totaling 43. Notably, 11 provinces reported no traffic fatalities.
On New Year’s Eve alone, 262 traffic incidents resulted in 36 deaths and 245 injuries. The leading causes of these accidents were found to be speeding at 42.75%, followed by drink-driving at 24.43%, and cutting-in at 21.37%.
Traffic congestion has been reported on both major and minor highways as many travelers return to Bangkok and other economically significant provinces after the celebrations.
Additionally, from December 27 to 31, more than 4,000 drivers were placed on probation for traffic violations, including 3,884 for drunk driving, 132 for drug abuse, and four for reckless driving. Chiang Mai reported the highest number of drunk-driving cases at 397, followed by 294 in Bangkok and 258 in Samut Prakan.
