The New Year holiday period has seen nearly 900 road accidents within the first three days, resulting in over 140 fatalities. Ayutthaya has reported the highest number of accidents, while Bangkok leads in death tolls.
According to Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong, between December 27 and 29, there were 872 traffic incidents, leading to 143 deaths and 841 injuries.
Excessive speeding was identified as the primary cause of these accidents, closely followed by instances of drink-driving. Motorcycles were predominantly involved in the incidents.
Ayutthaya experienced the most accidents at 35, with 32 injuries reported, while Bangkok recorded the most deaths, totaling seven.
Mr. Tawee noted that most travelers had reached their destinations and celebrations were underway. He emphasized the need for stringent law enforcement against drink-driving.
On December 29 alone, authorities recorded 280 traffic accidents, resulting in 47 fatalities and 269 injuries. The southern province of Surat Thani reported the highest number of incidents, at 12, contributing to a death toll of 10. Lop Buri also recorded 10 fatalities, while Sakon Nakhon in the northeast experienced four deaths.
