ECNETNews presents “Sons de S.Paulo,” a captivating series exploring the rich soundscapes of São Paulo’s cities, countryside, forests, and coastal regions. This initiative invites listeners to break free from their ordinary auditory experiences and engage with the diverse sounds that weave through daily life.
Prepare to enhance your perception as you listen to everyday noises that, at times, transform into melodies—a collective sound tapestry that is both familiar and intriguing. The interpretation of these sounds is subjective; they can evoke strains of music or merely be background noise, depending on the listener’s perspective.
In our latest feature, immerse yourself in an exclusive audio presentation recorded in Perdizes, São Paulo, during the last Tuesday of the year. A trio comprising a trumpeter and two percussionists (playing caixa and surdo) perform a hymn originally composed in 1949 for one of São Paulo’s prominent football teams.
This iconic composition was created by Gennaro Rodrigues, a pseudonym for the esteemed Italian-Brazilian cardiologist and musician Antonio Sergi, affectionately known as Totó (1913-2003). Beyond his medical career, Totó was a talented musician, conductor, arranger, and educator at the São Paulo Conservatory of Dramatic and Musical Arts, and even conducted the orchestra of Rádio Educadora Paulista.
Legend has it that Totó enlisted his relative Alberto Marino, a Corinthians supporter, to lend his voice to the hymn in its first phonographic recording, paying tribute to one of their fiercest rivals, Palmeiras.
Wishing everyone a wonderful end to the year!
