DETROIT — Vice President Kamala Harris is set to join Detroit-native singer Lizzo as she kicks off in-person early voting in the city on Saturday. This event marks a significant moment as more than 1 million Michigan residents have already cast their votes by mail ahead of the Nov. 5 election.
Harris expressed gratitude towards volunteers working to register and mobilize voters, stating, “We’re here today to thank all the folks for the work they are doing to help organize and register people to vote, and get them out to vote today.”
Clad in a “Detroit vs. Everybody” T-shirt, a gift from a campaign supporter, Harris praised Detroit as a symbol of hard work and resilience, contrasting sharply with recent negative remarks made by Republican nominee Donald Trump about the city. “It’s obviously good to be in a great American city and to applaud it for being just that,” she said, adding that Detroit residents possess “grit and ambition and deserve to be respected.”
Amid growing concerns over the Biden administration’s foreign policy, particularly in regard to the Israel-Hamas conflict, Harris acknowledged the complexity of Middle East relations. “It has never been easy,” she noted, “But that doesn’t mean we give up.”
Later in the day, Harris is anticipated to gain additional support during a rally in Atlanta featuring singer Usher, who is expected to address the crowd. Early voting is also actively taking place in Georgia, with over 1.2 million ballots already submitted, either in-person or by mail.
Democratic leaders are optimistic that their comprehensive organizing efforts will enhance Harris’s campaign against Trump during these critical final weeks leading up to the election.
