Arusha. The Arusha regional government, in collaboration with social development experts, has set an ambitious goal to eliminate all beggars within the city of Arusha in the next six months.
This initiative aims to reduce inconveniences faced by tourists, visitors, and business operators within the city.
This decision was reached during the Regional Consultative Committee (RCC) meeting held today, Thursday, December 19, 2024.
During the meeting, member Viola Likindikoki emphasized that the increasing number of beggars poses a significant challenge and diminishes the city’s reputation.
Arusha Regional Administrative Secretary, Mussa Missaile, stated that many of the beggars are individuals with disabilities living in hazardous conditions. “This situation not only endangers their lives but also undermines the city’s image,” he remarked.
However, he noted that the government has begun collecting data on these beggars in collaboration with local leaders to assist them in various ways, including facilitating their return home or enabling them to start economic activities.
“Currently, the city council possesses over 6 billion shillings allocated as ten percent loans for women, youth, and persons with disabilities. We encourage individuals with disabilities to refrain from begging in the streets and instead apply for these loans for legitimate business endeavors,” Missaile added.
Representing the Regional Commissioner of Arusha, Paul Makonda, meeting chairman Dadi Kolimba stressed the importance of supporting genuine beggars while taking action against those exploiting their situation for economic gain at the expense of others.
Isaya Doita, Chairman of the Arusha City Social Development Committee, highlighted the necessity of conducting thorough research to accurately determine the number of beggars and their actual needs.
He stated that measures to address this challenge are expected to be completed by June 2025, aiming to enhance the status of Arusha City and improve the lives of individuals with disabilities and others in special circumstances.
