GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – The Ministry of Labour is set to launch an array of impactful campaigns this year focused on enhancing household safety, improving labour practices, and promoting career readiness among the youth and women.
The announcement was made during a recent press briefing at the labour ministry’s headquarters, where the government’s strategy aimed at creating a stronger workforce through youth engagement and women’s empowerment was discussed.
Two primary initiatives are on the agenda: an informative programme designed to guide children through the transition into employment and a series of educational lectures focused on household safety.
The ministry intends to collaborate with the education sector to conduct seminars that will prepare young people for the workforce, ensuring they possess essential skills before graduation.
“A significant number of students exiting secondary schools are ill-equipped for the job market…We must implement a programme in collaboration with the education ministry to conduct seminars for fifth and sixth form students, preparing them for future employment,” highlighted the Minister of Labour.
The curriculum will include lessons on workplace safety, etiquette, crafting CVs and resumes, and preparing for job interviews. Additionally, discussions will focus on job selection and identifying career paths that align with individual skills and interests.
The ministry aims to roll out this programme across various regions in Guyana by the end of 2025.
Furthermore, the household safety initiative is crucial in light of the rising incidents of domestic injuries reported.
“Health and safety concerns extend beyond workplaces. Incidents such as gas bottle explosions at home are increasingly common,” the minister noted.
The objective of the household safety programme is to eliminate stigma surrounding safety at home and to emphasize the importance of proper knowledge when handling potentially hazardous equipment or substances.
