Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has urged the Centre to posthumously confer the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, to late seer Sri Shivakumara Swamiji, citing his profound contributions to society.
During a commemorative event for the seer’s 118th birth anniversary at Siddaganga Matha in Tumakuru district, Shivakumar stated, “Sri Shivakumara Swamiji has provided food, education, and shelter to countless individuals, transcending caste and religion. The Central Government should consider him for the Bharat Ratna award.”
He called on the Union Defence Minister to raise this appeal with the Prime Minister, emphasizing that this request comes not just from him but on behalf of the people and government of Karnataka. “Sri Shivakumara Swamiji has significantly impacted many lives, fostering achievements within our community,” he remarked about the sacred institution.
Shivakumar shared personal anecdotes about the seer, recalling his meeting with him in his final days and how he had been inspired by the seer’s emphasis on humanitarian service. “The Swamiji exemplified the principle that salvation comes from a guru. His teachings guide us, and his legacy of equality is a responsibility we must uphold,” he said.
Sri Shivakumara Swamiji, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 111, was a revered Indian spiritual leader and educator known as “Nadedaaduva Devaru” or “Walking God.” He has been instrumental in the Lingayat community since becoming the head seer of Siddaganga Matha in 1941 and was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 2015 for his humanitarian efforts.
