Goa’s tourism sector is outperforming the national average, according to State Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte. During a recent conclave with tourism stakeholders, he emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting local culture and traditions among visitors.
“Goa showcases remarkable resilience and adaptability in the tourism landscape,” Mr. Khaunte stated, refuting claims of a decline in tourist footfalls within the state. He addressed unique challenges faced by various tourist destinations, referencing issues highlighted by social media influencers and the need for systematic solutions.
The Minister acknowledged the growing tensions between local residents and tourists, particularly at popular destinations like Baga and Calangute beaches, citing concerns over waste management, public transport, and overall cleanliness.
“Reports indicate some disrespect towards local culture and regulations in areas frequented by budget travelers,” he noted, assuring that these concerns would be presented at the upcoming Goa Tourism Board meeting led by the Chief Minister, which will result in an actionable plan.
Moreover, Khaunte highlighted the importance of taxi drivers as ambassadors for long-term tourism, seeking to address complaints while reinforcing the significance of visitor education regarding local customs and boundaries.
“Our approach to tourism is distinct; we cannot be compared to Thailand, Sri Lanka, or Vietnam in terms of visitor numbers or policies,” he remarked, reinforcing Goa’s unique identity in the tourism sector.
This concerted effort reflects Goa’s dedication to nurturing a sustainable and respectful tourism environment, ensuring that both visitors and locals can enjoy the state’s rich heritage and vibrant culture.
