George Edward Lowe, a renowned voice actor celebrated for his iconic roles in Adult Swim cartoons, has passed away following a prolonged illness at the age of 67.
Lowe is best remembered for his role as Space Ghost in the cult classic series Space Ghost Coast to Coast. His impressive voice talent also graced shows such as Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Robot Chicken, Squidbillies, American Dad!, Sealab 2021, and others, where he further expanded the Space Ghost character in various programs, including The Brak Show and Perfect Hair Forever.
Premiering in 1994, Space Ghost Coast to Coast reimagined the Hanna-Barbera superhero Space Ghost as a quirky talk show host. The show featured interviews with numerous renowned actors and musicians like Thom Yorke, David Byrne, and Björk.
A notable insight into Lowe’s interview style revealed that he conducted conversations with celebrity guests over the phone, allowing for a unique dynamic in which his scripted questions sometimes did not align with the guests’ responses. This format allowed Space Ghost to deliver humorous, biting remarks without the guests being aware, creating memorable comedic moments.
Originally airing until 1999, Space Ghost Coast to Coast made a comeback for two additional runs, first from 2001 to 2004 and again from 2006 to 2008. Following the passing of C. Martin Croker, who voiced Space Ghost’s sidekicks, Adult Swim honored his legacy by making several episodes available for streaming.
Outside of voice acting, Lowe was also a talented visual artist and art collector, with exhibitions at notable institutions, including the High Museum of Art. He expressed a passion for inspiring future generations through art, hoping that his work would encourage others to find their creative voice.
