Nintendo has officially announced key details about the highly anticipated Switch 2, including its pricing structure. The new console will retail for $449.99 standalone or $499.99 as part of the exciting Mario Kart World bundle, launching on June 5. The price has caused quite a stir among consumers, particularly given the current economic climate.
Initial impressions from hands-on demos reveal that the Switch 2 is a significant upgrade, boasting enhanced performance, a larger 1080p display, and an ethernet port in its redesigned dock. Despite concerns over its high price tag, the console is viewed as a “must-buy” for avid gamers looking for the latest technology. However, many may hesitate to invest over $450 in what some may consider a luxury item.
For those looking to save on their Switch 2 purchase, trading in an older Switch model is an excellent option. The new console supports backward compatibility, meaning players can still enjoy their Switch library. Currently, the best trade-in offer is available, providing up to $175 off a Switch 2 preorder when consumers trade in their previous-gen consoles through April 30.
Specifically, consumers can receive $175 in store credit for an OLED Switch, $120 for a standard Switch (V1 or V2), and $100 for a Switch Lite. Additionally, Pro members can benefit from a 10% increase in trade-in value. It’s important to note that these offers depend on the condition of the older system and the inclusion of all necessary components such as the dock, AC adapter, HDMI cable, and both Joy-Con controllers.
In comparison, other retailers are not matching these trade-in deals, with significantly lower offers available. For example, competitors may only provide $90 for an OLED Switch and as little as $20 for standard Switch models.
Preorders for the Switch 2 will commence on April 9 at participating retailers, with the My Nintendo Store starting on May 8. Staggered batches of preorder invites will be sent via email, prioritizing active Nintendo Switch Online members.
