One of the largest stars in the universe, WOH G64, is undergoing a rapid transformation and is on the verge of a potential supernova explosion.
Catalogued in 1981, WOH G64 is located approximately 160,000 light-years from Earth within the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way. This red supergiant is among the largest known stars, characterized by its significant mass and cool temperatures. As WOH G64 runs out of hydrogen fuel in its core, it shifts to burning an outer layer of hydrogen gas that encases it, indicating its imminent evolution.
