Bangkok City Hall has issued a warning for residents living along the Chao Phraya River to prepare for potential flooding next week, particularly in areas lacking permanent flood barriers.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) advised those in flood-prone zones to relocate their belongings to higher ground and monitor the river levels closely from October 14 to 23.
This anticipated flood risk stems from the rising water levels of the Chao Phraya River, compounded by forecasted high tides and increased water discharge from the Chao Phraya Dam in Chai Nat province.
While specific flood-prone areas were not disclosed, data from 2022 indicated that vulnerable districts may include Dusit, Phra Nakhon, Samphanthawong, Bang Kholaem, Yanawa, Bangkok Noi, and Klong San.
BMA spokesman Aekvarunyoo Amrapala noted that thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in northern, northeastern, and central regions this week could exacerbate the flooding situation by increasing water levels flowing into the Chao Phraya River.
In Chiang Mai, significant flooding has already occurred due to the swollen Ping River, which is gradually receding. The Ping River is one of the rivers that converge to form the Chao Phraya at Nakhon Sawan.
As of Monday, the Chao Phraya Dam was discharging water at a rate of 2,199 cubic meters per second.
