Former Vice President Dick Cheney has made headlines by declaring his support for Vice President Kamala Harris, stating he will choose her over former President Donald Trump. Cheney cited Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election as the driving force behind his decision.
Cheney, now 83, expressed, “In our nation’s 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump. He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again,” during a recent announcement.
Emphasizing the importance of civic duty, Cheney added, “As citizens, we each have a duty to put country above partisanship to defend our Constitution. That is why I will be casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.”
Cheney’s remarks followed his daughter, former Rep. Liz Cheney, publicly endorsing Harris earlier in the week. On Saturday, Harris thanked the Cheneys for their endorsements, calling them “well-respected” leaders committed to prioritizing the nation over party allegiance.
Harris stated, “It’s time to turn the page on the divisiveness. It’s time to bring our country together and chart a new way forward,” during her campaign activities in Pittsburgh, where she is preparing for an upcoming debate against Trump.
In reaction to the Cheneys’ support, Trump expressed his discontent on social media, labeling Dick Cheney as an “irrelevant RINO” (Republican in Name Only) and extending the insult to his daughter. Liz Cheney, who became a vocal critic of Trump following the January 6 insurrection, stated that her opposition to Trump ultimately resulted in her losing her congressional seat. She reiterated her support for Harris due to the dangers she believes Trump poses to the nation.
Furthermore, Dick Cheney has expressed his concerns about Trump in the past, notably appearing in a campaign advertisement for Liz in which he referred to Trump as a “threat to our republic” and a “coward.”
The Cheney family is not alone in their support for Harris, as other prominent Republicans such as former Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger, Olivia Troye—former Trump White House national security official—and Stephanie Grisham, a former White House press secretary, have also voiced their disillusionment with Trump’s leadership.
