Massive Crowds Gather at Chon Buri Zoo to Meet Baby Hippo Sensation
Visitors eager to catch a glimpse of Moo Deng, the renowned baby hippo, have only five minutes for viewing, the Khao Kheow Open Zoo announced on Saturday, as a record number of fans descended on the site in Chon Buri province.
Zoo director Narongwit Chodchoi noted that the two-month-old female pygmy hippo’s fame has surged, particularly after her feature in major international media.
On Saturday morning, traffic was delayed for two hours as over 12,000 visitors arrived, prompting zoo staff to enforce a strict five-minute viewing limit, with groups of 30 to 50 allowed at once.
Mr. Narongwit shared that weekday attendance has increased to an average of 700 to 800 visitors daily, while weekend numbers have surged to between 6,000 and 7,000.
Long lines of cars stretch outside the zoo as eager visitors wait their turn to see Moo Deng.
To enhance the experience for returning visitors, the zoo has established pathways leading to various exhibits, including capybaras, elephants, and penguins.
The expansive 2,000-acre facility is set to introduce a 24-hour livestream channel featuring Moo Deng next week, reminiscent of the popular TrueVisions Panda Channel from years past.
Profits from Moo Deng merchandise sales will be directed toward improving the zoo’s animal habitats.
Moo Deng enjoys her enclosure while spending time with her mother.
While the influx of visitors has positively impacted the local economy, the zoo prioritizes the safety of both guests and animals, Mr. Narongwit emphasized.
Moo Deng’s area is now under surveillance with security cameras, and signage in three languages—Thai, Chinese, and English—cautions visitors against potential violations of animal welfare laws.
The latest media coverage highlights Moo Deng’s endearing charm, showcasing her playful antics and adorable demeanor that have captivated viewers online.
Experts recommend visiting in the morning from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., when keepers engage her with cleaning and feeding, or between 10 a.m. and noon to find her relaxing in the water.
Aphisamai Saengphakdi, who traveled 90 minutes from Bangkok with her children, expressed delight at witnessing Moo Deng in person, stating that the baby hippo was just as charming as seen online.
Moo Deng, meaning “bouncy pig” in Thai, was born on June 10 to pygmy hippo parents Jona, 25, and Tony, 24.
