Five people have lost their lives in a spate of shootings in northern France, including incidents near a migrant camp. A 22-year-old man has surrendered to authorities, according to local reports.
The tragic events unfolded in Loon-Plage, close to Dunkirk, where two security guards and two migrants were shot dead, as per security sources. Authorities state the suspect has also admitted to a previous shooting in Wormhout.
Weapons were reportedly discovered in the suspect’s vehicle. Dunkirk’s Mayor, Patrice Vergriete, has indicated that the motive for these attacks remains undetermined. He referred to the incident as a “tragedy,” highlighting that an individual “coldly murdered several people” in the vicinity.
Xavier Bertrand, head of the regional assembly, confirmed the fatalities, labelling the incident a “tragic event.” Emergency services have been heavily deployed near the migrant camp, though it remains unclear whether the shootings occurred within the settlement itself.
Loon-Plage is known for its temporary settlements that house migrants, situated near Calais and the Strait of Dover, a common route for individuals attempting to cross the English Channel.
