ECNETNews, New York, NY, September 16, 2024: In a significant shift, former President Donald Trump has announced his support for cannabis legalization, potentially reshaping his campaign ahead of the upcoming election. Despite being a teetotaler, Trump is now backing pro-cannabis policies, including the legalization of recreational marijuana in Florida, his home state.
The move comes as marijuana legalization continues to gain popularity across the United States, with over two dozen states already permitting recreational use. This shift could resonate particularly well with crucial Democratic voter demographics, such as Black men and younger voters. A 2022 Pew Research survey highlighted that 61% of Black men are in favor of legalization.
Although cannabis has not been a primary concern for most voters, Trump’s evolving stance may enhance his appeal among specific voter groups essential for a competitive race. This aligns with Trump’s broader populist agenda, which includes backing cryptocurrency initiatives and advocating for the elimination of taxes on tips, potentially garnering marginal yet impactful support.
“Are you looking at 10 percent of the population or vote? No, I don’t think so,” stated a former GOP senator from Colorado. “But are you looking at a marginal factor that could make a difference in a close state? Yeah, I think you could argue that there is enough.”
Political analyst Celinda Lake remarked that Trump’s new position on cannabis could resonate with a diverse voter base, including those who feel disconnected from the political process. “Cannabis is very, very popular with young people,” Lake emphasized, referencing a 2023 survey that indicated two-thirds of voters aged 18 to 25 favor easing federal cannabis restrictions. She noted that this stance might aid Trump in appealing to young voters, particularly young Black men, who lean toward Vice President Kamala Harris.
Currently, Trump has expressed public support for President Joe Biden’s efforts to relax federal marijuana regulations, including his intention to endorse Florida’s initiative for adult-use cannabis legalization. He has also indicated his support for federal legislation aimed at granting states more authority over legalization and enhancing banking access for cannabis businesses.
