Coimbatore District Police have made a significant arrest in connection with a troubling case of sexual assault involving a doctor linked to a prominent mobile medical service. A 28-year-old physician, S. Saravanamoorthy, has been accused of sexually assaulting over five girl students from a government school during a recent medical camp. The complaint was initiated by the headmistress of the school, prompting immediate police action.
Authorities report that the accused had been part of the outreach mobile medical services aimed at providing healthcare to rural areas in Coimbatore district.
The situation escalated during a student meeting organized by school officials on Wednesday, which aimed to address issues of safety and sexual harassment following a recent video conference led by top officials. Students from Classes VI to X were encouraged to come forward with any incidents of harassment they had experienced.
In shocking revelations, multiple students reported to the headmistress that Dr. Saravanamoorthy had assaulted them during the medical camp, alleging that during examinations, he failed to use proper equipment and inappropriately touched them.
The school authorities promptly reported these troubling allegations to the District Child Welfare Committee (CWC), which subsequently conducted an inquiry and alerted the police.
A police spokesperson confirmed that a case has been registered at the All Women Police Station in Perur, under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, specifically citing aggravated sexual assault and related offenses.
Dr. Saravanamoorthy was arrested late Thursday and was presented in court the following day, where he was remanded to judicial custody.
The organization associated with the doctor has issued a statement expressing its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy for any offenses against women and children. The organization confirmed it is fully cooperating with the ongoing police investigation and will follow all necessary legal procedures.
