Air France has announced the temporary suspension of its direct flights to Zanzibar, effective from early 2025, prompting concerns among local tour operators regarding the potential impact on the island’s competitiveness compared to regional destinations.
The suspension will occur over several months, with no direct flights scheduled between France and Zanzibar during this timeframe, specifically from March 22 to May 25, 2025. Alongside Air France, KLM, part of the same airline group, will also pause its Zanzibar service from Amsterdam, extending from March to October 2025.
Air France clarified that the decision is part of a planned pause during the island’s “green season,” a period typically characterized by lower travel rates, rather than active cancellations. Notably, French tourists have significantly contributed to Zanzibar’s tourism, with arrivals of 10,093 in October and 6,299 in November, making up 10 percent of total visitors.
Since launching direct flights to Zanzibar’s Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in October 2021, Air France has provided three weekly round trips. However, this service will be halted, along with the route to Kilimanjaro International Airport in northern Tanzania during the same period.
Local tourism professionals have expressed concerns that the lack of direct flights could diminish Zanzibar’s allure for travelers. A representative from a local inbound agency emphasized that direct flights are essential for comfort and convenience, potentially influencing travelers to opt for alternative destinations like Kenya or South Africa.
The suspension coincides with the rainy season, traditionally a quieter time for tourism; however, the impact on off-season travel may still be significant. French travelers wishing to visit Zanzibar during the suspension will face longer journey times with connecting flights. For instance, a trip from Paris to Zanzibar via Nairobi can take up to 13 hours and 55 minutes, compared to a direct flight.
Other airlines, including Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Emirates, provide one-stop options, which could further complicate travel planning for those looking to visit Zanzibar from France.
