Visakhapatnam experienced relentless rainfall on Saturday, December 21, 2024, as the Depression situated over the west-central Bay of Bengal progressed east-northeast at a speed of 7 km/h, according to the latest weather reports.
During a three-hour period from 8:31 a.m. to 11 a.m., Visakhapatnam recorded 5 mm of rainfall, while Srikakulam district registered the highest rainfall in the state, measuring 31.75 mm in Gara.
The weather system was located about 440 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam and 600 km south-southwest of Gopalpur, Odisha, based on current weather bulletins.
Forecasters predict that the system will continue to move slowly east-northeastward, maintaining its intensity as a depression for the next 12 hours before gradually weakening over the sea.
The ongoing heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions have caused notable coastal erosion in several areas across the state.
In Visakhapatnam, coconut trees near the INS Kursura submarine museum have been uprooted, and the rising water levels have threatened nearby plantations. These trees were originally planted several years ago by authorities to combat beach erosion and enhance recreational opportunities for visitors.
Meteorologists emphasized that such phenomena are typical during adverse weather conditions such as low pressure systems, depressions, or cyclones. They urged authorities to limit public activities along the shore, particularly in areas prone to erosion due to local geographical factors.
