A groundbreaking new app, Steppin, aims to help users reduce their digital consumption. Acknowledging the dependency many have on technology, this iOS app encourages individuals to embrace healthier habits by limiting their app usage.
Steppin, launched on Tuesday, promotes the tagline “Escape the Scroll” and enables users to block access to various apps and websites, particularly social media, until they achieve a set goal of physical activity. The app’s inspiration came from an experience during a family trip to Spain, where users found themselves more engaged with their devices than the cultural sites around them.
What to know about new research on screen time and kids’ mental health
With Steppin, users can set personal fitness goals to unlock screen time, such as completing a certain number of steps for a limited time on TikTok or Instagram. This innovative concept aims to enhance both mental and physical well-being for users of all ages.
In addition to social media, Steppin allows users to apply these controls to video games and streaming platforms like Netflix. Future updates will enable creative ways of unlocking screen time through various physical activities, including yoga and Pilates.
Currently available on iOS with plans for an Android release, Steppin is free to use at the moment, but there are indications of transitioning to a subscription model—expected to be approximately $20 per month—down the line.
