Chris Wood’s remarkable journey in professional football began in New Zealand, where he started playing at just 15. After moving to England at 16, he made his Premier League debut for West Bromwich Albion in 2009. Despite gaining experience, Wood faced challenges securing consistent playing time and was loaned out to six different clubs within three years.
During his loans, Wood showcased his talent at clubs like Barnsley, Brighton, and Millwall, before permanently joining Leicester City. Reflecting on his loan experiences, Wood expressed gratitude, stating, “It made me the player I am today as I learned different things from various clubs.”
A Turning Point at Leeds
In 2015, Wood transferred to Leeds United, seeking more regular playing time. Under manager Garry Monk, he flourished, scoring an impressive 27 goals in one season. Wood credited Monk and his assistant, James Beattie, for transforming his game, emphasizing the importance of mental strength and tactical guidance.
Success at Burnley
Joining Burnley in 2017 for a record fee, Wood quickly established himself as a key player, contributing significantly to the team’s success in the Premier League over five seasons. He formed a formidable partnership with striker Ashley Barnes, which was characterized by exceptional understanding and teamwork.
New Beginnings at Nottingham Forest
After a stint at Newcastle United, Wood moved to Nottingham Forest in January 2023. Following an injury, he saw limited action initially but has since thrived under manager Nuno Espirito Santo, demonstrating his ability to score consistently and adapt to a more attacking style of play.
Wood’s impact extends beyond the pitch. As New Zealand’s record goal scorer and captain, he aims to inspire future generations of Kiwi footballers to pursue their dreams in the Premier League.
