Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam has emphasized the urgent need for preparedness ahead of the northeast monsoon. He has instructed officials to deploy teams from the State disaster response force to flood-prone areas in anticipation of potential flooding.
During a crucial meeting aimed at bolstering the State’s response capabilities for the monsoon season, Muruganandam highlighted the importance of providing area-specific weather reports. He underscored the necessity of keeping essential equipment, water pumps, and boats ready in vulnerable locations.
Department secretaries and key officials attended the meeting to strategize and ensure effective coordination.
Additionally, Muruganandam proposed conducting awareness meetings with flat-owners’ associations. He urged for a thorough evaluation of ongoing projects by the highways department, the Greater Chennai Corporation, and Metro Rail within the Chennai basin, stressing that flood mitigation efforts need to be finalized before October 15.
Organizing Zone-Wise Meetings
The Chief Secretary instructed Collectors from Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur, along with Commissioners from Chennai, Avadi, and Tambaram Corporations, to arrange zone-wise meetings. He insisted that each official be assigned distinct responsibilities to enhance disaster management efforts.
