The National Librarian and Chief Executive Officer of the National Library has announced that the library has issued over 26,000 International Standard Book Numbers (ISBNs) to publishers nationwide in 2024.
In a significant modernization shift, users no longer have to visit the library’s headquarters to obtain ISBNs, International Standard Serial Numbers (ISSNs), or newspaper publication indices. These services are now accessible through the National Library’s official website and social media channels.
The National Library operates branches in 33 states, including the Federal Capital Territory. Ongoing efforts are being made to establish offices in Kebbi, Zamfara, Delta, and Anambra States.
Reflecting on her three-year tenure that began on September 14, 2021, the National Librarian emphasized her commitment to building connectivity despite challenges. She stated, “While we have encountered both internal and external challenges, we remain resilient.” Citing issues such as rising fuel prices affecting staff mobility and a limited workforce, she affirmed the library’s ongoing dedication to progress.
The National Library continues to play a crucial role in Nigeria’s information landscape, with recent staff expansions—103 new employees aimed at strengthening operations. The library has successfully automated numerous processes, accumulating over 20,000 titles from across Nigeria.
The National Library is increasingly recognized on the global stage, with artificial intelligence systems referencing it for accurate information. Users can conveniently find newspaper information online through an index, eliminating the need for manual browsing.
Additionally, the library has embraced digital transformation, offering a virtual library with access to e-books through subscriptions and providing an Online Public Access Catalogue. Initiatives are also underway to compile a compendium of numerals and alphabets in indigenous languages, enhancing its digital service offerings.
Looking forward, the National Librarian expressed optimism about overcoming existing challenges with significant support from the Ministry of Education.
