The Duskbloods, showcased in the recent Nintendo Direct for the Switch 2, will feature a unique gameplay experience without fully customizable characters. Instead, players can select from a diverse cast of over a dozen characters who come with distinct identities and weapon styles, as confirmed by developer From Software.
Initially thought to resemble the PlayStation 4-exclusive Bloodborne, The Duskbloods has emerged as an eight-player multiplayer-focused PvPvE title. In a recent developer interview, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game’s director, elaborated on the innovative “Bloodsworn” characters and the game’s PvPvE dynamics.
Players will not create characters from scratch; rather, they will choose from a roster of unique heroes, each equipped with weapons for both melee and ranged combat. Additionally, players can summon NPCs to assist during battles. While the customization is limited, Miyazaki emphasized that players can alter each character’s “blood history and fate,” influencing abilities, appearance, and interactions within the game. Character progression is achieved through match participation and objectives, allowing upgrades and unique customizations.
In terms of gameplay, players will strive to complete objectives to earn Victory Points and be the last Bloodsworn standing. Special personal objectives and events will present opportunities for various rewards, with players able to assign roles that encourage collaboration or competition against specific targets.
This shift marks a departure from From Software’s traditional RPG offerings and draws parallels to their upcoming title, Elden Ring: Nightreign, which also features a hero-based character selection where players unite to overcome challenges.
Despite the multiplayer emphasis, Miyazaki reassured fans that From Software remains committed to single-player game development. The Duskbloods was originally conceptualized for the first Nintendo Switch before being reimagined for the new Switch 2 hardware.
The Switch 2 is scheduled for release on June 5, though recent US tariff policies have led to delays in preorders and potential price increases. Meanwhile, The Duskbloods is set to launch as a Switch 2 exclusive in 2026.
