Bluesky has officially introduced a crucial feature that enhances its platform and positions it as a serious contender against other social media giants.
On Wednesday, Bluesky revealed the long-awaited addition of native video functionality, allowing users to upload videos directly within their posts.
“Bluesky now has video!” the platform announced. “To start using this feature, update your app to version 1.91 or refresh on desktop! We’re gradually rolling out the ability to post videos. Thank you for your patience!”
Bluesky had previously indicated that this highly requested feature was forthcoming. Just a day before the launch, the platform made users aware that they might observe video posts as they tested the new functionality and completed its development.
Bluesky’s Video Feature Overview
As a new offering, the video upload feature comes with specific limitations. Users can upload videos that are up to 60 seconds long, with only one video allowed per post. Currently, users can upload a maximum of 25 videos or 10GB of video data per day, with possible adjustments to these limits in the future. Supported file types include .mp4, .mpeg, .webm, and .mov.
Users have the option to add subtitles to their videos and label content accordingly, including adult content designations. Videos will auto-play by default, but users can disable this feature in their settings.
Before uploading videos, users must verify their email addresses. Bluesky also outlined its content moderation practices, stating that each video will be examined for any content that requires warnings or removal, including illegal materials.
Bluesky Competes with Elon Musk’s X
Since the acquisition of X, formerly Twitter, there has been a notable push towards prioritizing video content on that platform. New users seeking alternatives to X amid recent changes found a welcoming environment in Bluesky, although the absence of native video functionality posed challenges.
With the introduction of video features, Bluesky has effectively addressed user concerns at a pivotal moment. The platform recently reported a surge of 3 million new users in just one week, partly attributed to X’s controversies and its subsequent ban in Brazil.
