Vogue Editor Anna Wintour, U2 frontman Bono, and renowned philanthropist George Soros are set to receive the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom from outgoing President Joe Biden. This year, 19 distinguished individuals will be honored, representing a diverse array of cultural icons, politicians, and dedicated campaigners.
The White House highlighted that this year’s honorees are exemplary individuals who have made significant contributions to their nation and the global community. The award ceremony is scheduled for Saturday at the White House.
Bono, known for his advocacy against poverty and support for HIV/AIDS awareness, has previously garnered France’s highest cultural honor and received an honorary knighthood. Anna Wintour, who has been the editor-in-chief of Vogue since 1988, has raised over $20 million for AIDS research and has actively supported arts organizations amid funding challenges.
Among the recipients are influential figures, including Hillary Clinton, who will receive the medal shortly before her former political rival assumes the presidency, following her loss in the 2016 election.
The lineup of cultural luminaries includes actors Denzel Washington and Michael J. Fox, alongside sports icons such as Lionel Messi and Earvin “Magic” Johnson. Fashion designer Ralph Lauren and American Film Institute founder George Stevens Jr. are also among those being honored.
Additional recipients comprise humanitarian chef José Andrés, recognized for his efforts in providing food during crises, acclaimed conservationist Jane Goodall, and celebrated science educator Bill Nye. The awards will also be posthumously presented to former U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, former Defense Secretary Ash Carter, civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer, and former Governor of Michigan George W. Romney.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom, established by President John F. Kennedy, is awarded at the discretion of the sitting president, based on recommendations from an advisory panel. Past recipients have included notable figures like gymnast Simone Biles, Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh, and tech pioneer Steve Jobs.
