BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – The efficiency of the Barbadian government has taken a significant leap with the appointment of Senator Jonathan Reid as the new Minister of Industry, Innovation, Science and Technology. This pivotal swearing-in ceremony was officiated by President Dame Sandra Mason at State House, as highlighted by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley.
During the ceremony, Prime Minister Mottley emphasized the impact of technological advancements on public expectations. She warned that when expectations exceed what the government can realistically deliver, it can lead to a loss of faith in government institutions.
“One of the challenges we face is transitioning the nation from an analogue to a digital environment. While progress has been made, I urge us to accelerate this transformation. Maintaining public trust in democracy requires us to meet and manage citizens’ expectations. This Ministry is designed to bridge that gap, fostering digitization and innovation,” Mottley stated.
In response to challenges in education, particularly in Mathematics and Science, Prime Minister Mottley noted that CARICOM heads of government have recently agreed to establish an Educational Transformation Commission aimed at improving performance in these critical subjects.
Mottley added, “Industry is another essential aspect of this ministry. Observing our industrial infrastructure, it’s evident that we must revitalize and modernize the systems inherited from past decades.”
Senator Reid described his new role as one filled with “incredible opportunities.” He stressed the importance of collaboration within the ministry to enhance the work of other government sectors.
“This ministry will foster collaboration and be pivotal in driving digital transformation. The technologies we implement will serve as the backbone for efficiency and empowerment across the government. Together, we can transform Barbados into a more innovative society,” Reid emphasized.
Reid previously served as an advisor to Prime Minister Mottley during her first term before becoming chief of staff in 2022. He has an educational background from Christ Church Foundation School, Barbados Community College, and The University of the West Indies.
