NARATHIWAT – A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday morning when an award-winning police officer and his son were killed in an ambush while traveling in their pickup truck. Pol Lt Col Suwit Chuaythewarit, 56, and his son Pol Snr Sgt Maj Dome Chuaythewarit, 35, were attacked on Sri Sakhon-Chanae Road around 9:50 a.m., according to local police reports.
Their vehicle was overturned following the detonation of an improvised explosive device hidden along the road.
Pol Lt Col Suwit, who served as the principal of Tua Ngo Border Patrol Police School in tambon Sri Banphot, was notable for his commitment to education in a remote area, where approximately 120 Muslim children, most of them non-native Thai speakers, receive their schooling.
A dedicated Muslim educator originally from Phatthalung province, Pol Lt Col Suwit had worked alongside 11 other teachers to support the school’s mission.
Officials indicated that the father and son were en route to purchase school supplies at the time of the attack.
Formerly recognized with the Princess Maha Chakri Award a decade ago for his outstanding contributions to education and student development, Pol Lt Col Suwit had always aspired to provide educational opportunities for children in his community. His own upbringing, including attending a border patrol police school, inspired him to pursue this path.
His enduring mission was to teach his students to communicate in Thai, thereby broadening their educational horizons and opportunities for personal growth. Additionally, the curriculum emphasized moral values and self-sufficiency.
