Lando Norris Reflects on Historic Australian Grand Prix Victory
Lando Norris has stated that if the Australian Grand Prix of 2023 had been conducted under the same chaotic conditions as last year, he would not have emerged victorious. Norris skillfully navigated mixed weather in Melbourne, fending off competition from Max Verstappen to achieve what many are calling one of the most extraordinary triumphs in Formula 1 history, especially on a day that witnessed six drivers crash out and where strategic decisions were crucial.
This win marks McLaren’s first season-opening victory since 2012, solidifying Norris’s position as a top contender for the championship title this year.
“We have a well-balanced car, yet success is not solely dependent on the vehicle,” Norris shared. “Today’s victory was earned through effective teamwork. Last year, we might have faced the same situation but would not have won due to poorer decision-making – but today, we excelled.”
He commended his team for their hard work during the off-season to prepare for a significant day like this one.
Reflecting on previous races impacted by rain last season, such as the Canadian, British, and Sao Paulo Grands Prix, Norris admitted he faced missed opportunities for victory during those events.
“We dropped the ball in a few races last year, particularly at Silverstone where we made a poor strategic choice,” he recounted.
Norris began the race from pole position but faced intense pressure from teammate Oscar Piastri during the initial laps. He emphasized the importance of clear communication with his engineer, Will Joseph, in navigating the tricky conditions.
“There was a lot of dialogue on the radio; it felt like story time,” Norris explained. “I was ensuring we remained prepared and proactive, anticipating the right strategic moves.”
The pivotal decision to switch to intermediate tires during the final rain shower was made just moments before he entered the pits, which ultimately proved to be decisive.
“A little drizzle made a notable difference today, especially while on hard tires, enabling us to pit decisively,” Norris stated, attributing tire strategy as a crucial aspect of his success.
The F1 circus will continue to the Shanghai International Circuit next week for the first Sprint weekend of the season at the Chinese Grand Prix. Coverage begins Friday, promising to showcase another exciting chapter in the championship.
