NEW YORK — Lawyers for Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs have requested a New York judge to compel prosecutors to reveal the identities of his accusers in the ongoing sex trafficking case.
In a letter submitted to a Manhattan federal court, Combs’ legal team argued that knowing the identities of the alleged victims is essential for preparing an adequate defense for the upcoming trial. A trial date has been set for May 5, and Combs has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
Currently, Combs, 54, is being held without bail following his federal arrest on September 16. His attorneys have appealed for his release to home detention to facilitate better access for trial preparation and consultations with his legal team. However, judges have consistently ruled that he poses a danger to the community and should not be released.
This latest request for disclosure of accusers comes shortly after six new lawsuits were anonymously filed against Combs. These lawsuits seek to protect the identities of alleged victims, with some listed as Jane Does and others as John Does. The lawsuits allege that Combs exploited his celebrity status and offered promises of career advancement in the music industry to lure victims into situations where they were subsequently assaulted.
The plaintiffs in these recent lawsuits are purportedly part of a broader group of more than 100 accusers who are pursuing legal actions against Combs.
In their communication with Judge Arun Subramanian, Combs’ attorneys described the case as particularly unusual due to the high number of accusers, which they attribute to his wealth, fame, and the publicity surrounding a previously settled lawsuit. Notably, this referenced lawsuit involved his former girlfriend, whose allegations of abuse have continued to impact Combs’ public image.
Combs’ legal representation claimed that the sensational nature of the allegations and the surrounding media coverage pose a threat to his right to a fair trial. They argued that in order to mount a proper defense, it is crucial for Combs to be informed about the specific allegations that the prosecution intends to pursue.
The indictment includes serious charges against Combs, alleging a pattern of coercion and abuse against women, supported by a network of associates. The accusations detail methods including blackmail, arson, and physical violence to suppress the victims’ ability to speak out.
