The Government of India has raised significant concerns regarding the rising incidents of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh highlighted in the Lok Sabha that from November 26, 2024, to January 25, 2025, there were 76 reported attacks on the Hindu community in the neighboring country.
This troubling trend of violence has escalated, with reports indicating that since August 2024, 23 individuals from the Hindu community have been killed, alongside the targeting of 152 temples in violent confrontations, Singh noted in his written statement to the Lok Sabha.
India has addressed the matter at the highest diplomatic levels, stressing the urgent need for enhanced protections for minority communities in Bangladesh.
“India’s concerns regarding the safety of Hindus and other minorities were emphasized during the foreign secretary’s trip to Bangladesh,” Singh stated.
“It is primarily the responsibility of the Government of Bangladesh to ensure the protection of all citizens’ life and liberty, including those from minority backgrounds. The High Commission of India in Dhaka is closely monitoring the situation,” he added.
In response to these discussions, the Bangladeshi government announced on December 10, 2024, that 70 individuals had been arrested in connection with 88 cases involving attacks on minorities. Investigations revealed 1,254 incidents of violence against these communities, as identified by Bangladeshi authorities.
The Indian government has reiterated that it is the duty of the Government of Bangladesh to protect the lives and rights of all individuals, including minorities. Meanwhile, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka will continue to closely observe the situation to ensure necessary actions are taken to prevent further violence and secure justice for the victims.
