An assistant referee involved in EFL and FA Cup matches is scheduled to appear in court over allegations of child sexual offenses. Gareth Viccars faces a charge of penetrative sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 and 15.
Viccars, 46, appeared in Willesden Magistrates Court last week and has been remanded in custody. His next court appearance at Snaresbrook Crown Court is set for March 3, where a plea will be entered.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), responsible for officiating in English professional football, has suspended Viccars pending the outcome of a police investigation. It is reported that he has not officiated any matches this season.
A spokesperson for PGMOL stated, “As soon as the allegations came to light, Mr. Viccars was immediately suspended. As this matter is part of an ongoing police investigation, we are unable to provide further comments.”
