The coronavirus responsible for COVID-19 has significantly impacted global health, infecting billions and resulting in approximately 15 million deaths. Additionally, around 400 million individuals are coping with long-term health complications stemming from the virus. The pandemic also triggered the most severe economic downturn since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Nevertheless, experts suggest that the situation could have been far more catastrophic.
“In the context of historical pandemics, COVID-19 was moderate in impact,” notes a leading expert from the University of Edinburgh. “As we look to the future, it is crucial to prepare for potential pandemics that could be significantly worse than what we experienced with COVID-19.”
