The Leader of the National Consultative Front, Prof. Pat Utomi, has revealed significant efforts to form a robust coalition aimed at challenging the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 general elections. This initiative is being described as a critical undertaking amidst Nigeria’s current political landscape.
Utomi, a prominent figure in the opposition movement, shared that numerous dissatisfied members of both the APC and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in addition to individuals from five other political parties, are eager to join this coalition.
In a recent statement, Utomi emphasized the urgency of this initiative, highlighting that many political actors from various parties have expressed their desire for collaboration to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges. He mentioned that discussions are ongoing regarding the specific platform that will best serve their objectives for the 2027 elections.
“This is serious business. Nigeria is at a critical juncture during a time of shifting global dynamics,” Utomi stated. He elaborated on the focus of their efforts, emphasizing the importance of engaging influential groups within existing parties.
“There are many individuals within the APC and PDP who share our vision for development and have substantial followings who are reaching out to us with this sentiment,” he noted. Utomi also mentioned that the Social Democratic Party is evolving, with around five other parties undergoing similar developments.
He assured that numerous individuals are preparing to depart from both the APC and PDP, signaling a potential shift in the political landscape. “However, the core principles of our coalition must remain steadfast,” he asserted.
When asked about how the coalition plans to manage the diverse interests of its members, Utomi indicated that self-sacrifice and collective decision-making will be fundamental to its success.
His remarks come on the heels of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s announcement regarding a coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in 2027, which included various opposition leaders and stakeholders.
Utomi reiterated the coalition’s broader goals, stating it seeks to revive Nigeria’s cultural integrity through exemplary political conduct. The NCFront has also signaled plans to unveil this comprehensive coalition in June, suggesting that opposition parties and discontented members of the ruling APC are engaged in extensive discussions to forge a united front against the current administration.
Key players from both Northern and Southern regions, including defectors from the APC and civil society groups, are actively participating in these negotiations. Notably, Northern stakeholders are particularly supportive of the coalition, citing the negative impact of the current administration’s policies on their region.
Utomi emphasized that this coalition aims to advocate for a government of national unity dedicated to advancing the common good in a transparent, democratic manner. He rejected the notion of egocentric leadership, calling for a collective approach that prioritizes the nation’s progress.
“A national unity government is essential to foster development across Nigeria, emphasizing collaboration rather than individual interests,” he said.
Moreover, he is committed to ensuring that the coalition works towards meaningful democratic reforms that serve the Nigerian populace, aspiring to revitalize the ethical standards within political parties and enhance the recruitment of capable individuals into public office.
“The transformation we seek is driven by a dedicated group focused on disciplined organization and collective action to elevate our national governance,” Utomi concluded, underscoring the coalition’s mission to promote democratic values while countering malpractices within the political sphere.
