Stakeholders within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the North Central region are actively consulting on strategies to attract Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Zonal members believe that securing support from Mutfwang, a key political figure, is essential for the APC’s efforts to regain control of Plateau State. This initiative was outlined in a letter directed to the APC National Secretary, detailing the group’s intentions.
The letter, authored by the Chairman of the North Central APC Forum, Salleh Zazzaga, and presented to the national secretariat by Sani Jigas, the Nasarawa State Chairman, emphasizes the urgency of inviting Governor Mutfwang to join the APC. The communication stated that a formal invitation would also be sent to the governor, the Plateau State APC, and his local ward in Mangu.
The letter highlighted several consultations conducted with prominent APC members from Plateau and the broader North Central region to strategize on engaging the governor. Notably, Mutfwang is currently the sole governor in the North Central region not affiliated with the APC, making his inclusion critical for aligning political strategies among regional counterparts.
Zazzaga addressed the declining proactive stance of APC leaders in Plateau, particularly following a Supreme Court ruling that confirmed Mutfwang’s election victory. He criticized the need for APC leaders to convene outside the state for reconciliatory talks, indicating a lack of organization within the party.
The push to bring Mutfwang into the APC comes three months after the North Central chieftains supported the suspension of the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, while also calling for leadership positions to be restored to their region.
With the 2027 general election approaching, the APC is emphasizing the importance of reclaiming Plateau State to prevent the PDP from extending its influence to other areas.
