A former Governor of Osun State and prominent leader of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Adebisi Akande, has emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive transformation within Nigeria’s educational system. He urged institutions, particularly universities, to focus on producing graduates equipped with skills that enhance economic value.
Speaking at his residence in Ila-Orangun, Osun State, while hosting the Vice Chancellor of Ekiti State University (EKSU) and other key officials, Akande highlighted the importance of aligning educational outcomes with global competitiveness. He warned that failing to do so could leave the nation behind in an increasingly competitive world.
Akande stated, “For global competitiveness, we cannot afford to be complacent. Universities must ensure they do not produce graduates who lack the ability to contribute meaningfully to the economy.” He advocated for a reevaluation of the educational curriculum, asserting that degrees should be awarded alongside the relevant skills necessary for national growth.
Expressing gratitude for the visit from the EKSU management team, Akande praised the institution for its recent accolade as the best state university in Nigeria, attributing this success to effective leadership. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Babatola Ayodele, acknowledged the visit as an opportunity to seek guidance from Akande, whose insights are invaluable for the university’s continued progress.
The VC further asserted EKSU’s commitment to providing well-rounded and qualitative education, noting, “Every student graduates with practical skills that prepare them for successful careers, rather than merely pursuing traditional white-collar jobs.”
