From November 1, 2024, the cost of a one-way flight from Lagos to Abuja on Air Peace will reach an unprecedented N200,000. This substantial fare increase is a direct response to the ongoing economic challenges in Nigeria, which have significantly impacted the aviation sector, leading airlines to raise ticket prices amidst growing frustrations from travelers.
The latest fare adjustments have compelled many Nigerian passengers to opt for road transport over air travel. Recent assessments of airfares revealed that Air Peace will have the highest prices compared to its domestic competitors. While Air Peace’s one-way fare sits at N200,000, other airlines are also adjusting their rates: Aero now charges between N94,000 and N109,000, Arik Air’s fares range from N104,405 to N139,292, and Ibom Air’s prices fluctuate between N124,000 and N133,000.
The surge in airfares has created a challenging situation for many travelers, resulting in increased passenger congestion at airports as individuals struggle to secure flights. The highly trafficked Lagos-Abuja and Abuja-Lagos routes have been especially affected, leaving many without viable options.
An anonymous source from Air Peace confirmed the fare hike, attributing it to Nigeria’s deteriorating economic conditions. The source highlighted the financial burdens faced by aviation companies, stating, “If you analyze the ticket pricing, it’s evident that we are struggling as an airline, with operational costs spiraling out of control.”
Attempts to reach the Chief Operating Officer of Air Peace for further comment were unsuccessful.
Longtime air traveler Adeleke Aina voiced his concerns regarding the soaring airfare rates, expressing his frustration over the lack of transparency behind the pricing hikes. “With the way airfares are escalating daily, I may have no choice but to switch to road transport,” he remarked. He lamented the rising cost of fuel and the perceived inaction from the federal government on this issue, emphasizing that such economic challenges are detrimental to the well-being of the country.
