Lagos. Billionaire entrepreneur Prateek Suri, the wealthiest Indian billionaire in Africa, has announced a substantial commitment to philanthropy through his newly created foundation.
This pledge marks one of the largest individual donations in history, aimed at enhancing education, healthcare, and child development across Africa. His initiative will focus on funding schools, teacher training programs, and medical projects in underserved areas.
"This is not just charity—it’s a legacy," Suri emphasized. "Wealth shines brightest when used to illuminate the path for others."
A Billionaire’s Rise to Influence
Born in Delhi, India, Suri’s journey began from humble roots. He attended Modern School, Barakhamba Road, and went on to receive a degree in mechanical engineering from BITS Pilani, Dubai.
His entrepreneurial breakthrough occurred in 2012 when he founded Maser Group, which specializes in affordable consumer electronics for the African market. His flagship product, a smart television, has sold over 800,000 units across the continent.
The recent $5 billion acquisition of SCG Asia has propelled Suri’s net worth to $1.4 billion, ensuring his position at the top of Africa’s wealth rankings. He also leads MDR Investments, a venture capital firm with interests in mining, infrastructure, shipping, and artificial intelligence (AI).
Empowering Africa Through Innovation and Philanthropy
Suri credits his experiences in Africa as pivotal in shaping his business vision. "It was during my time here that I recognized the vast potential within this diverse market," he noted, explaining how this exposure inspired his future endeavors.
He is now focused on using his success to uplift Africa’s economic and social development. "I know what it feels like to struggle to find your place in the world," he shared. "But with determination and hard work, anything is possible. I want to use my platform to inspire and empower others."
Suri’s contributions to Africa’s economic landscape are gaining recognition. He was recently awarded Investment Leader of the Year at the Gulf Business Awards 2024, drawing comparisons to prominent figures like Aliko Dangote for his impactful role.
With a growing business empire and a strong commitment to social progress, Suri is positioned to be a significant force in shaping Africa’s future—not just as a billionaire, but as a dedicated philanthropist.
