Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has officially requested the establishment of a military operation base in the eastern region of the state to combat escalating criminal activities.
The governor made this request during a visit by the General Officer Commanding the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army. He emphasized the urgent need for enhanced security measures in light of rising criminal incidents coinciding with significant commercial development in the area, which includes the location of the state’s airport.
Abiodun articulated that a Forward Operation Base in this region would be instrumental in effectively managing the increasing crime rates. “The level of commercial activities in the eastern part of the state is increasing, and this is accompanied by a rise in criminal activities,” he stated. “We need a Forward Operation Base there to help us maintain peace and order.”
He highlighted the importance of a visible security presence to deter potential criminals from neighboring states and acknowledged the Brigade Commander for their swift response to various security challenges in locations such as Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode.
The governor raised concerns that negative reports about crime could dissuade potential investors, underscoring the critical need for robust security measures to foster a safe environment for economic growth.
Abiodun assured the deployment of state resources to support the establishment of the military base, asserting that a permanent military presence, particularly around the Remo axis, would enhance the Army’s responsiveness to security challenges.
He commended the newly appointed General Officer Commanding, expressing confidence in his capabilities and reiterating his administration’s commitment to collaborating with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies.
In response, the General Officer Commanding expressed appreciation for the governor’s support, specifically regarding the welfare of the families of fallen soldiers and logistical assistance, and assured that the Army would intensify efforts to secure Ogun State. “I have instructed my officers and men to intensify their efforts to uphold the peace and security of Ogun State,” he remarked.
This appeal for a military base showcases ongoing initiatives to bolster security measures in Ogun State amidst the backdrop of increasing commercial activities and associated challenges.
