The Abia State Government has taken decisive action by demolishing a building in Osisioma Local Government Area that served as a hideout for kidnappers. This move is part of a broader effort to enhance security and deter criminal activities in the region.
During a press briefing in Umuahia, the Commissioner for Information emphasized the importance of landlords conducting thorough background checks on potential tenants, warning that many prioritize immediate rent collection over the safety and security of their communities.
The Commissioner called for property owners to maintain accurate records of their tenants and ensure their homes are not exploited for illegal activities.
“The state government is committed to demolishing any structure used for kidnapping,” the Commissioner stated. He urged the community to remain vigilant, monitor their surroundings, and report suspicious activities to the authorities.
This initiative follows a successful police operation that led to the apprehension of six suspected kidnappers, the rescue of four victims, and the recovery of significant weaponry, including two AK-47 rifles, six magazines, and 32 rounds of live ammunition.
Governor Alex Otti expressed his administration’s strong stance against criminal hideouts, ordering the complete demolition of the implicated building and vowing to pursue legal action against its owner.
“Landlords who permit criminals to operate from their properties share the blame for these heinous acts,” Governor Otti stated. He has directed local government officials to collaborate with traditional leaders to foster community vigilance against suspicious individuals.
