In a shocking incident, a doctor was shot dead at a nursing home in the Kalindi Kunj area of southeast Delhi in the early hours of October 3, 2024.
The assailants, suspected to be juveniles, arrived at the facility seeking treatment and fatally shot Javed Akhtar, a practitioner of Unani medicine, around 1:45 AM.
Authorities reported that Mr. Akhtar was discovered slumped in a chair, bleeding profusely from the head.
Initial investigations revealed that two boys, around 16 years old, had entered Nima Hospital shortly before the incident for a medical dressing. One of the boys, who had an injured toe, had visited the hospital the day prior.
After receiving treatment, the pair accessed Mr. Akhtar’s cabin.
Moments later, night shift nurses Gajala Parveen and Mohammad Kamil heard a gunshot. Parveen rushed to the cabin, only to find Akhtar motionless in a pool of blood.
The police suspect this tragedy may be a targeted killing, noting the unprovoked nature of the attack, which implies prior surveillance.
Investigators are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the hospital’s reception, dressing room, and surrounding areas for clues about the incident.
