An entrepreneur from the Difa community in Yamaltu Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State, Salisu Danjuma, reports earning over N2.5 million annually through tomato cultivation. This sustainable venture has not only secured his livelihood but also created employment for approximately 70 youths who are engaged in various capacities on his farm.
In an interview, Danjuma highlighted that during the dry season, he focuses solely on tomato farming, typically yielding over 55 large baskets per week. These tomatoes are then distributed to markets in Enugu, Rivers, and other southern states, underscoring the demand for quality produce.
“I generate over N2.5 million annually from tomato farming, which has enabled me to support my family and provide income opportunities for others,” Danjuma stated. He detailed the pricing for his produce, noting that each large basket sells for N11,000, while medium baskets are priced at N8,000.
Despite the lucrative nature of his business, Danjuma expressed concerns about rising costs for fertilisers and agrochemicals, which have impacted his overall profits. He emphasized that while irrigation farming involves higher expenses, it is a worthwhile investment.
Danjuma urged the youth in Gombe State to take advantage of agricultural opportunities, particularly through irrigation farming using local water resources. “Agriculture is a profitable venture, and waiting for government employment is not a sustainable option for young people,” he asserted.
The 40-year-old farmer shared that he remains active throughout the year, utilizing different farmlands according to seasonal conditions. He advocates for greater governmental investment in irrigation farming, stating that reliance on wet season farming alone is insufficient for achieving food security.
“Supporting youths with irrigation facilities would promote dry season farming, which is more profitable and can significantly reduce youth unemployment,” Danjuma explained. He also called for government assistance in establishing mini-processing facilities to minimize post-harvest losses, a common challenge for farmers after harvest season.
ECNETNews will continue to monitor the developments in agricultural practices that promote economic growth and youth employment in Nigeria.
