Zanzibar Government Champions Digital Transformation with Mobile Fuel Payment Service
Zanzibar officials have reaffirmed their dedication to embracing digital technology, emphasizing its critical role in bolstering security and fostering economic development.
During the launch of a new mobile payment service for fuel purchases in Unguja on March 2, 2025, Second Vice President Hemed Suleiman Abdulla praised local initiatives that illustrate the region’s advancements in digital transactions.
“Zanzibar is making impressive progress in technology. This initiative serves as a testament to our digital transformation and alignment with global trends,” Mr. Hemed stated.
The introduction of mobile fuel payments is expected to improve transaction security, minimize cash dependency, and allow citizens to buy fuel quickly using their mobile devices.
Mr. Hemed further urged fuel providers to implement comprehensive security measures at service stations and encouraged other retailers in Zanzibar to adopt electronic payment systems to further government financial inclusion goals.
“I urge citizens to fully utilize this service, as it will streamline payments, enhance transparency, and protect their funds,” he added.
The regional director of the payment service, Azizi Said Ali, emphasized the company’s commitment to collaborating with the government and other agencies to broaden digital payment solutions across diverse sectors.
“We are prepared to work together to advance digital transactions in service delivery, ensuring trust and security for both providers and consumers,” he remarked.
He also expressed openness to partnerships aimed at enhancing essential services such as electricity, water, and fuel through innovative digital payment methods.
Zanzibar Petroleum’s regional manager, Altaf Jiwan, reassured customers of the company’s commitment to providing efficient, swift, and high-quality services. He highlighted that the mobile payment system is designed for convenience, safety, and 24/7 accessibility.
