ECNETNews, New York, NY, Sun. Feb. 23, 2025: MSNBC has officially announced the cancellation of The ReidOut, a prominent primetime political commentary show. This decision aligns with significant programming changes at the network, coincidentally unveiled on the day Guyana commemorates its 55th Republic anniversary.
The final episode of Reid’s show is scheduled to air this week, as MSNBC prepares to introduce a new program at 7 p.m., co-hosted by Symone Sanders-Townsend, Alicia Menendez, and Michael Steele, currently anchoring The Weekend.
Since its inception in 2020, The ReidOut has been a platform for progressive discussions. However, its cancellation comes amid broader restructuring efforts at MSNBC, initiated following the recent appointment of Rebecca Kutler as president, who has taken the helm after the departure of Rashida Jones.
Further changes are anticipated in MSNBC’s primetime lineup, including a shift for Alex Wagner, who is expected to transition from hosting a four-night-a-week program at 9 p.m. to a contributor role.
As MSNBC approaches a pivotal moment, preparing to separate from NBC News and transition into a newly publicly traded entity, the network faces challenges, including projected subscriber losses. Market research indicates that MSNBC could lose approximately 10.5% of its subscribers from the end of 2023 to 2025. Kutler has outlined plans to establish an independent news-gathering division as part of the network’s evolving strategy.
Reid’s tenure as a political analyst has been marked by her distinct, unapologetically progressive commentary. Despite her prominence as one of MSNBC’s leading Black female anchors, recent reports reveal a decline in viewership for The ReidOut, with a 28% drop in February compared to the same period last year, based on Nielsen data.
Reid has a notable background in journalism, having previously hosted The Reid Report and AM Joy. While her future endeavors remain uncertain, her departure signifies a crucial transition for MSNBC as the network navigates its restructuring phase.
