Zanzibar Government Enhances Voter Registration Security with Modern Technology
The Zanzibar government has unveiled a robust initiative aimed at utilizing advanced technology to identify and mitigate disruptions during the ongoing voter registration process. This strategic move is designed to ensure a peaceful and secure environment, enabling citizens to exercise their voting rights in the forthcoming October 2025 elections.
The second phase of the voter registry update is set to commence on February 1, 2025, in Micheweni District, concluding on March 17 in Urban District. This registration drive will primarily focus on new voters who have just turned 18, based on data from the 2022 census, and will require proof of Zanzibari identity.
Mr. Hamza Hassan Juma, the Minister of State in the Second Vice President’s Office, has confirmed the government’s comprehensive preparations to tackle any potential security concerns throughout the registration phase. He highlighted the implementation of modern technology as a critical tool for detecting and preventing disruptions, ensuring a seamless process for all eligible voters.
Citizens are encouraged to participate in the registration process peacefully and to report any threats to public safety to local authorities or the Second Vice President’s office. Mr. Juma further detailed the legal stipulations for registration, including residency and eligibility criteria as delineated in the Zanzibar Election Act.
In addition, Mr. Juma reminded the public that political parties are allowed to station agents at registration centers to promote transparency. He noted, "The law also allows for objections to individuals’ registration if they do not meet the legal requirements."
Calls for increased public education regarding the significance of voter registration have emerged from community members, such as Ms. Khadija Salum. Ms. Salum urged the government to take a more proactive role in informing the public about the registration process, rather than delegating this responsibility solely to political entities.
