The residents of Thiruverkadu are set to experience improved access to Mount Poonamallee-Avadi Road with the Highways Department nearing completion of a new 17-meter-wide bridge spanning the Cooum River. This bridge is designed to accommodate both vehicles and pedestrians, featuring dedicated cycle tracks and walkways on either side.
Local business owner M. Venkatesh highlighted the bridge’s significance, stating that it will enhance connectivity to several important temples, including the Devi Karumariamman and Vedapureeswarar temples. “These temples will now be within walking distance from Mount Poonamallee – Avadi Road, reducing the previous 4 km journey. We hope for proper maintenance and lighting for nighttime use,” he remarked.
Construction of the 300-meter-long bridge commenced in 2021 but faced delays due to lockdowns and monsoon conditions. An engineer involved in the project explained that efforts were made to redirect water flow to facilitate construction. Currently, the painting and electrical work are nearing completion, with final touches being applied to the median, along with the installation of signboards and road markings.
The total construction cost of the bridge is ₹19.48 crore, which includes ₹7 crore for land acquisition. The new bridge replaces a low-level causeway that was prone to flooding during heavy rains. This region has seen a notable increase in pedestrian and cyclist traffic, with an estimated 250 bicycles and 500 to 600 pedestrians expected to utilize the bridge during peak hours.
This crucial infrastructure project promises to enhance transportation and foster community connectivity in Thiruverkadu, making everyday travel safer and more efficient.
