PALM BEACH, Fla. — President-elect Donald Trump welcomed 22 of the nation’s 27 Republican governors for a dinner at his Florida club, aiming to shape future policies in conservative-led states just days ahead of his inauguration.
Montana Governor Greg Gianforte stated that the few GOP governors who missed the gathering were either being inaugurated or delayed by adverse weather, adding that those present were eager to establish a collaborative relationship not seen during the Biden administration.
“It’s been a long period without cooperation from Washington,” Gianforte said, expressing optimism about the new administration’s approach. “We have a lot of business to get done on behalf of our states.”
While most media representatives were not permitted inside, limited access allowed for coverage of Trump’s dialogue with attendees, where he addressed various topics including thoughts on controlling Greenland and potential tariffs on Canada.
Additionally, Trump revealed that Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed interest in meeting, and arrangements are underway.
This dinner followed a closed-door meeting with Republican senators, which Trump characterized as “a love fest,” extending similar sentiments to the governors as well.
Trump emphasized the importance of cooperation with leaders from all political affiliations, stating, “We want to get along with the Democrats. I’m trying to be nice.”
Gianforte mentioned that many governors expressed concerns over federal overreach by agencies under the Biden administration, voicing collective frustration.
When asked about Trump’s recent criticism of Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom amid wildfires, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis attributed the division to media influence, assuring that Trump would collaborate effectively with both red and blue states.
DeSantis highlighted his past effective cooperation with both the Biden and Trump administrations during crises, reaffirming confidence in Trump’s upcoming government.
In response to inquiries about recent drone sightings, Trump stated that several governors raised concerns about potential breaches of security by such aircraft, suggesting the government may not be forthcoming on the issue and promising further disclosure post-inauguration.
“We’re gonna find out on the 21st,” he stated, indicating he would report more details soon after taking office.
